PhD student position in Fluid dynamics

Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB söker Doktorand i Göteborg

Information about the department
The Department of Applied Mechanics is one of the leading environments within Vehicle and Mechanical Engineering research. The six different research divisions conduct world-leading research, usually in close collaboration with national and international industries. Research topics encompass both fundamental and applied research questions. The fluid dynamics research divisions, has a strong commitment in the areas of computational (CFD), experimental turbomachinery and aero-acoustics. A key focus of the research group is to understand and develop aero engine innovations.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student in this project you will do numerical analyses that will lead to increased understanding of loss-generating and function-limiting mechanisms in complex turbomachinery components and thus contribute positively to the ability to design more efficient engine components. The project will, more specifically, focus on adopting an integrated approach to the design of compressor ducts, including the bleed system and rear low-pressure compressor stages. You will use an in-house CFD code jointly developed by Chalmers and GKN Aerospace. In the initial part of the project, the ability of this software to simulate the flow in the above-mentioned component will be verified. In a second stage an integrated concept will be designed and the resulting configuration will be tested in a relevant rig environment at the unique test facility at Loughborough University.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
An educational background in mechanical engineering or engineering physics covering courses on basic and advanced fluid mechanics and CFD.

Courses in compressible flow, numerical analysis and programming are meritorious. Practical CFD experience is also meritorious.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
