PhD student position in image reconstruction for microwave tomography

Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB söker Doktorand i Göteborg

Information about the department
At the Department of Signals and Systems, we conduct world-leading research in biomedical engineering, antennas, signal processing, control, automation, mechatronics and communication systems. Our research deals to a large extent with the modeling and development of efficient systems for extracting, processing and communicating information. The systems our researchers deal with include for instance e-Health, hearing aids, robotics, power chains, and mobile telephony.

The department has about 120 employees, divided into three research divisions and one administrative unit. A majority of our activities are gathered at Campus Johanneberg, except for some research in medical engineering which is done at Sahlgrenska and an education unit at campus Lindholmen. The department offers more than 70 courses, of which are most included in the Masters Programs; ”Biomedical Engineering”, ”Systems, Control and Mechatronics”, and ”Communication Engineering”.

Information about the research and the project
We are seeking a PhD student that will work within the Biomedical electromagnetics research group at the department of Signals and Systems. The focus of this group is to develop new and more effective medical methods and systems for diagnostics and treatment. Stroke diagnostics, breast cancer detection, microwave tumor treatment and localization of epileptic brain activity are a few examples.  The main activity in the development towards these applications involves mainly, signal processing methods, antenna systems design and design of measurement hardware. Construction of complete prototype systems for clinical tests is a key goal in all projects.

In this research project you will work in a team on developing a multi-channel hardware system for microwave tomography.  Potential applications include breast, bone and brain imaging. Your part of the project will be oriented towards electromagnetic modelling of the system and development of new imaging algorithms. The project also involves testing the algorithm and the system in the lab and in real clinical applications.

Major responsibilities
The goal with a PhD-position is to develop general research proficiency and a high competence within your specific research area. As a PhD-student, you will primarily conduct research, often together with other researchers and PhD-students. You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks. You are expected to write a licentiate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. The total time period for the position is limited to four years full time, or five years with 20% teaching load.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The employment is composed of a maximum full-time four-year doctoral programme and a maximum one year of department duties, including teaching, equivalent to a maximum of 20 % of the total working time. The employment is thus limited to a total of five years. The employment is tied to successful progress of doctoral studies, evaluated at one and three years.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's degree, (corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits), or equivalent in a relevant field. The position requires good communication skills in written and spoken English.

A requirement for the position is that you have a background in electromagnetics, and have a strong interest for microwave tomography and biomedical applications. Advanced skills in programming languages like MATLAB and C/C++ are required. We consider knowledge of commercial electromagnetics modeling software, like CST/HFSS/SEMCAD a merit.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
